What is BASI Pilates?
A contemporary approach rooted in the original method
BASI Pilates (Body Arts and Science International) is an international Pilates education organization founded in 1989 by Rael Isacowitz, with an extensive global education network today.
How is BASI Pilates different from other schools?
BASI preserves and teaches the original repertoire and principles developed by Joseph and Clara Pilates, while continually evolving the way the method is approached and taught by incorporating contemporary knowledge of anatomy, human function and movement.
BASI is characterized by:
-
precision and quality of movement,
-
balanced whole-body conditioning and the integration of strength, mobility, control and flow,
-
an understanding of the purpose behind each exercise and the ability to adapt it to the needs of each individual,
-
high-level teacher education, with consistent standards worldwide and ongoing educational development.
One of the school’s key innovations is the BASI Block System®, a system that organizes the Pilates repertoire into different categories, or blocks. In Equipment sessions, the Block System provides structure, flow and continuity, while ensuring balanced work throughout the body.
BASI Pilates Mat and BASI Pilates with Equipment
Mat and Equipment Pilates are based on the same principles of the method, but offer different experiences and possibilities.
BASI Pilates Mat
In Mat Pilates, the body itself works against gravity as the primary source of resistance. The practice develops strength, control, mobility, balance and coordination, and may also incorporate small props.
Unlike Equipment sessions, Mat classes do not strictly follow the sequence of the Block System. Exercises are connected with a clear sense of progression and continuity, creating a flow that resembles choreography, while the level of difficulty gradually increases as the class develops.
At BASI, Mat work is considered a foundation of the method — not a simpler or merely introductory form of Pilates.
At Area 10, BASI Pilates Mat classes are taught in small groups, allowing for close attention to technique and individual guidance.
BASI Pilates with Equipment
In sessions using the Reformer, Tower, Chair or Cadillac, the springs and equipment can provide resistance, support, or both, allowing exercises to be adapted more precisely to the needs of each individual body.
This is where the BASI Block System is applied in its complete form.
At Area 10, Equipment sessions are offered exclusively as private sessions or duets for up to two people, allowing for truly individualized guidance and adjustments.
The Area 10 approach
For us, BASI Pilates means understanding not only which exercise we teach, but why we choose it, what we want to achieve and how we can adapt it to the person in front of us.
Our aim is to offer a session built on knowledge, precision and meaningful individual guidance — whether on the Mat or with Equipment.
