Dance Classes with Eleni Kontzila

Ballet
Ballet is an art form that was born in Italy during the Renaissance. It later evolved into its stage form in France and then in Russia.
It then spread worldwide as an art and dance genre with a specific technique, terminology, and structural composition, while it continues to evolve to this day.
It provides the body with alignment, proper posture, strength and flexibility. As ballet exercises are accompanied by appropriate music, it develops musicality and a sense of rhythm. A ballet class includes exercises on the barre and small dance combinations in the center.
It is an excellent type of exercise that trains the entire body, which is why it is not only aimed at children and professionals, but also at adults who choose it as an amateur.
Our space offers beginner and intermediate level classes.

Contemporary Dance
Contemporary dance began in the mid-1920s.
Isadora Duncan is considered a pioneer as she was the one who questioned the structures of ballet and sought a type of dance that would allow greater freedom of movement and expression. Duncan was followed by many important people in dance who created their own personal style and technique. Progressively and as a mixture of elements of ballet, jazz and oriental dance and movement techniques, contemporary dance emerged, which is one of the dominant dance genres worldwide.
It uses and exercises the entire body equally, it is characterized by shifts in speed and direction, while the use of the floor is a key element of this technique.
Every possible movement can be done in a contemporary dance class and every piece of music can be danced to. Contemporary dance improves the perception of space inside and outside our bodies, develops connection with other dancers, respects the uniqueness of each body and liberates mind and body.

Barre a terre
Barre a terre is an exercise method based on classical ballet technique but performed on the floor. It was started by Zena Rommett in 1960 in New York as she tried to improve her students' posture by having them perform ballet exercises lying down.
This technique has been shown to have many benefits for dancers, as it improves spinal alignment, frees up movement in the hip joints, and improves flexibility. It also allows exercise during periods of injury since the exercises are performed on the floor without the pressure of weight.
Barre terre is widely practiced as a type of exercise, offering the benefits of classical dance, full-body strengthening, muscle lengthening, balance and flexibility.
It is done on a mat and, like ballet, is accompanied by music.

Pilates Mat Group
At Area 10 we mainly follow the method of the international school BASI Pilates which offers a complete workout for the whole body, with unique precision and dynamic flow. At the same time, many variations or modifications are performed, to offer variety or to adapt to the level and needs of the students. Also, props are often used, such as foam rollers, rings, elastic bands, and balls in various sizes. The classes are aimed at practitioners, beginners or experienced, who want to develop their practice methodically and progressively. Always following the basic principles of Pilates, with a strong Powerhouse (center) the spine is aligned, we find balance and flexibility , while the muscles acquire alignment without unnecessary volume.
